Impact protection for warehouse and pedestrian zones at LKQ
For LKQ in Beringen and Bruges, MDO Group installed targeted impact protection for vulnerable areas within the warehouse. Based on safety inspections, warehouse racking, gates, pedestrian zones and building columns were better protected against potential impact from internal transport.
Targeted protection for vulnerable warehouse areas
For LKQ in Beringen and Bruges, MDO Group installed extensive impact protection following safety inspections. Racking, gates, pedestrian zones and building columns were provided with targeted protection against potential impact from internal transport. This allowed several vulnerable areas at both sites to be structurally addressed.
The challenge
In warehouses where internal transport operates on a daily basis, vehicles regularly move close to racking, passageways, building structures and employees. Even a small steering error can result in damage to infrastructure or create an unsafe situation.
The safety inspections at LKQ identified several areas where additional protection was recommended. The challenge was therefore not to protect one specific location, but to create suitable solutions for multiple risk areas within the warehouse environment.
MDO Group’s solution
Based on the identified points of attention, MDO Group installed targeted impact protection at both sites.
Several parts of the warehouse environment were protected:
- Warehouse racking against potential impact from internal transport.
- Gates in areas where vehicles manoeuvre close to infrastructure.
- Pedestrian zones to create a clearer separation between employees and moving vehicles.
- Building columns at vulnerable points within traffic routes.
By adapting the protection to the function and risk profile of each area, a broader safety approach was created for both locations.
Why impact protection?
Not every risk within a warehouse requires the same type of protection. A column located in a manoeuvring area has a different function and level of vulnerability than racking positioned alongside a traffic route or an area where employees are walking.
Targeted impact protection helps absorb the impact of a potential collision and limit damage to important infrastructure. At the same time, physical barriers can contribute to a clearer separation between internal transport and pedestrians.
By linking these measures to the findings of safety inspections, protection can be installed exactly where it is needed.
The result
Following the completed work, several vulnerable areas within LKQ’s warehouses are now better protected against collisions. Racking, gates and building columns are better shielded from internal transport, while the protection of pedestrian zones contributes to a safer working environment.
The project demonstrates how a safety inspection can be translated into practical improvements on the warehouse floor. Rather than waiting for damage to occur, potential risk areas can be identified and addressed in a targeted way.
